Medical Projects:

Some of our medical cases have included chemotherapy for a young girl with cancer, the purchase of ‘made-to-fit’ walking frames for 4 children with walking difficulties, treatment of indigenous migrant children for parasites and other serious illnesses, corrective eye surgery for a young girl, and many more; below is a list of some more detailed examples:

Omar G. Avalos Guizar
Omar is a 3 year old little boy on a waiting list for heart surgery. He is currently number 108 on the list, and is expected to get his surgery sometime between March and June. In the meantime, Omar gets regular medical check-ups and is on continuous medication. His mother, Yessica, also takes him to Guadalajara for appointments with the surgeon. ‘Ayuda a los Niños Costalegre A.C.’ pays for Omar’s medications and the costs implied in the visits to Guadalajara.
Restaurant Roosters recently teamed up with us to raise money for the surgery, which is expected to cost approximately $21,000 pesos.

Emilia Noeni Hernandez Curiel
Emilia is an 8 year old little girl, and is a student at C.A.M. Cihuatlán, the only school for special education in the area; she was born hemiplegic (paralysis of one side of the body), and with an intellectual deficiency. When Emilia joined C.A.M. Cihuatlán 6 years ago, she was unable to walk and suffered from regular convulsions. With the help of leg braces and physical therapy in C.A.M., Emilia can now walk and run, but still requires ongoing medication for her convulsions, which ‘Ayuda a los Niños Costalegre A.C.’  contributes towards, and her parents work hard to pay for the rest of her medications and her corrective shoes.

Merari Lorena Valencia Soto
Merari is a 15 year old C.A.M. Cihuatlán student with severe autism, who is on long term medication to control her aggressive behaviour (a symptom of severe autism). ‘Ayuda a los Niños Costalegre A.C.’ pays for Merari’s medications, and she attends C.A.M. Cihuatlán from Monday to Friday to develop her communication and social skills.

Luis Jorge Diaz Torres

Jorge is also a student of C.A.M. Cihuatlán, 5 years old, who has suffered from convulsions since the age of 1 year, and doctors have recently discovered that he also shows signs of autism. ‘Ayuda a los Niños Costalegre A.C.’ has paid for Jorge to have CAT scans in Colima with a neurologist, and contributes towards his ongoing medications.

Other Projects

Construction of school/day care for children of migrant farm workers in Jaluco
In 2008 we participated in the VIVE program, run by the Secretary for Human Development (Secretaría de Desarrollo Humano), for which we developed a proposal to build a school in the town of Jaluco, close to Melaque and Barra de Navidad. This was a ‘peso for peso’ program, where ‘Ayuda a los Niños Costalegre A.C.’ contributed $500,000 pesos, which was matched by VIVE.

The school is built on land that was kindly donated to ‘Ayuda a los Niños Costalegre A.C.’ by a farmer from the Jaluco Ejido. Due to the complications that came with being on the edge of Laguna del Tule (a large lagoon), the construction took longer than expected, but the school building is now completed, and the drainage system, bathrooms and water system are being completed as part of this year’s budget. The children are currently receiving lessons in the school.

Construction of medical clinic in Jaluco:
In 2009 we participated once again in the VIVE program, this time to build a medical clinic for the migrant farm worker families, and other families in the area. For this program, ‘Ayuda a los Niños Costalegre A.C.’ used the land value as our contribution, and has invested more donation money to complete the building. Further money from the 2010 budget will go towards connecting the drainage and water systems for the clinic.

Housing for migrant farm workers in Jaluco:
After the construction of the clinic, the Secretary for Social Development (SEDESOL) of the Mexican government, approached us with a proposal to build homes on the land that was donated to ‘Ayuda a los Niños Costalegre A.C.’, the same piece of land where the school and clinic are located. We accepted and donated the land towards their project, and the housing was built for 64 people, with funds from SEDESOL and the Cihuatlán Town Hall (Ayuntamiento).

Programa Escuelas de Calidad (P.E.C.):

PEC is a governmental scheme aimed at improving standards in state schools. Each school that participates must prepare a project proposal, explaining how they plan to spend the funds in order to improve their school and/or services. After an initial contribution to the school, whatever the school raises, up to a maximum of $50,000 pesos, is matched by the government. The schools must then provide receipts to show they carried out the project in question.

Each year we receive applications from local schools asking for help in raising money to participate in P.E.C., and here are some of the schools that have received our support:

Centro de Atención Múltiple, Cihuatlán (C.A.M.) – 2006, 2007, 2008
C.A.M. has received support in the form of donations for participation in PEC for the last 3 years. Completed projects include the construction of a recreational area, installation of a therapy pool, purchase of computers for computer aided learning, and the purchase of essential physiotherapy equipment.

Students and teachers from C.A.M. participate in fundraising events. The annual event at Restaurant Maya includes performances from the C.A.M. students and all of the funds raised from this event are donated directly towards C.A.M.’s budget for PEC.

Escuela Primaria ‘Virginia Torres’ – 2008
This primary school in San Patricio Melaque was severely damaged during the floods of 2007.

A total of $35,000 pesos was donated by Ayuda a los Niños to repair damaged computer equipment as well as for reconstructing the fallen perimeter wall which had become dangerous for the children, and for the installation of a new dining area to prevent children from having to sit on the floor to eat.

Escuela Primaria ‘Luis Benavides’ – 2008
After originally coming to us with a request for economic support to build a perimeter wall to protect the school from pesticide spraying from the neighbouring farmland, we reached an alternative solution for their initial problem and instead donated money for the school to participate in PEC. The farmer agreed to spray his fields only outside of school hours and the school used their P.E.C. money to construct a storage room for their educational supplies and a kitchen to prepare meals for the children

Other Educational projects:
Escuela Primaria ‘Emiliano Zapata’, Tomatlán – 2008
The Emiliano Zapata Primary school in the small town of Valle Majahuas in the municipality of Tomatlán receives students from the surrounding community. It is an area of few resources and Ayuda a los Niños cleaned and painted what was a dilapidated and unused building, as well as paying for new windows and doors. The room now accommodates more students and is also to be used by the town people for local meetings. A total of $15,000 pesos was spent on the renovation.

During the same visits, two laptops were also donated to the school by volunteers for computer aided learning. Computers are a valuable resource for schools here, and many don’t have the funds to purchase them; if anybody is thinking of disposing of old computers/laptops that are still on good working conditions then please consider this option.

Escuela Primaria Federal ‘Adolfo Ruiz Cortinez’, Pinal Villa – 2006

Located in the town of Pinal Villa, near Jaluco, this primary school received support from Ayuda a los Niños after receiving a private donation specifically for the need to repair the well and plumbing system. The project was then completed with funds from events and private donations by building a classroom to replace the previous one which consisted of a corrugated iron roof and no walls.

Please go to the photo galleries to see the classroom prior to the work carried out by Ayuda a los Niños.

Sponsorships

Each year, C.A.M. receives sponsorships for several students to continue attending this school for special education. The number of full sponsorships now stands at 14, and is used to cover transport costs to and from the school, as well as lunch and contributions towards cleaning costs. Without the sponsorships these children would not be able to attend the school with the regularity required to develop the skills they aim to acquire.
